  • Arthroscopic Capsular Release for the Treatment of Refractory Postoperative or Post-Fracture Shoulder Stiffness
The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, 2001, 83: 1682-1687.

This study reviews the success rates of Arthroscopic Capsular release in three groups of patients: those with idiopathic frozen shoulder, adhesive capsulitis post-operatively, and post fracture. The overall improvement in the range of Motion was very similar in all groups; however, the patients with post-operative stiffness had lower scores for pain, patient satisfaction and functional ability.

  • Four-Strand Hamstring Tendon Autograft Compared with Patellar Tendon-Bone Autograft for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Randomized Study with Two-Year Follow-Up
    American Journal of Sports Medicine, 29: 722-728, Nov./Dec. 2001.

Seventy-two patients with subacute or chronic anterior cruciate ligament insufficiency were randomly assigned to two surgical protocols to reconstruct the ACL with four-strand hamstring (37) and patellar tendon (35) grafts. The follow-up at six, 12 and 24 months was carried out at another hospital by independent observers revealing minimal differences, particularly at 24 months. The parameters included the Cincinatti functional score, KT arthrometer measurement, single leg hop, isokinetic strength testing and anterior knee pain.

  • A Prospective Evaluation of Untreated Acute Grade III Acromioclavicular Separations
    American Journal of Sports Medicine, 29: 699-703, Nov./Dec. 2001.
This is a prospective study following 25 patients with Grade III AC separation, treated non-surgically. Clinical assessment and isometric dynamometer testing was carried out at six, 12, 24, 36 and 52 weeks post-injury. Subjectively, four of the 20 patients thought that their outcome was suboptimal; however, three of the four thought that surgery was not warranted. The bench press was the only strength test which showed short-term difference (injured side on the average 17 percent weaker).

Cases of Interest: A three-step exercise program for seniors includes aerobic and cardiovascular and muscle strength and resistence training.
